Police Services Representative

If you enjoy helping people in a challenging, fast-paced environment, the Services Division of the Urbana Police Department has an excellent opportunity to serve as a Police Services Representative (PSR). The successful candidate will have outstanding communication skills, the ability to multi-task, and an eye for detail, as well as strong skills with typing, spelling, and the use of proper grammar. This position involves extensive public contact in stressful situations, requiring excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
 

PSRs are responsible for maintaining the department’s record system and information management system and serving as the primary contact point for public access to the department. PSRs cover the front desk in shifts from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week, 365 days a year. Applicants must have the ability to work all shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as well as overtime as needed.

The ideal candidate:
• Demonstrates excellent communication skills (both verbal and written)
• Is organized, self-motivated, and able to work independently and as part of a team
• Has excellent critical thinking, conflict resolution, and time management skills
• Is able to handle sensitive and confidential information with professionalism and tact

Required qualifications:  
• High school diploma/GED  or equivalent;
• Two years of related work experience or an associate’s degree/60 hrs.  of college credit  and one year of related experience.  Related experience is work in a setting with frequent interaction with customers or the public;
• Knowledge of business English, punctuation, spelling, business math, office practices and procedures, and operation of standard office equipment;
• Able to type accurately and perform data entry on a computer keyboard, use computer programs and word processing systems
• Able to work productively and calmly under stress and in possible emergency situations;
• Able to establish and maintain cooperative and effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties;
• Available to work weekends, holidays, rotating shifts and mandatory overtime, and must successfully pass a skills assessment examination as well as an extensive background investigation.

Maintenance Worker

Repairs and maintains streets, alleys, sidewalks, and parking lots; removes snow from streets and parking lots and spreads road salt; manufactures, repairs, and replaces street signs; repairs and replaces sewer lines, inlets, and manholes; cleans sewer lines; cleans streets and Public Works facility; mows grass, picks up leaves, and grinds stumps. The established work schedule is currently: April 1 through October 31: 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. with a 20 minute paid lunch; November 1 through March 31: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. with a 20-minute paid lunch. To maintain City operations, temporary 12-hour shifts may be established; these may be scheduled (for known events such as leaf collection and street sweeping), and unscheduled (for emergencies such as snow removal, storm cleanup, etc.). This position is eligible for overtime/compensatory time.

Qualifications include:


• Must possess, or be able to obtain within 3 months of hire, a State of Illinois Class B CDL driver’s license
• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
• Ability to work in all weather conditions.
• Ability to maneuver and position fifty (50) pounds on a regular basis

Preferred Attributes:
• At least 18 months of prior on-the-job experience in any of the following categories: concrete construction or repair, asphalt construction or repair, sewer construction or repair, or traffic sign construction and maintenance where the work performed was the primary occupation.

Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector

The City of Urbana has an exciting opportunity for a demonstrated professional to join our Building Safety Division within the Community Development Department as a Building Inspector I: Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector.  Strong candidates will have demonstrated knowledge of applicable codes and exceptional interpersonal communication skills to effectively work with citizens, contractors and coworkers.

Qualifications include:

 

  • Licensed Plumber by the State of Illinois.

  • Considerable knowledge of the codes, laws, and ordinances relating to plumbing installations and operations.

  • Knowledge and skills typically acquired through graduation from high school or equivalent

  • Two (2) years of experience related to plumbing systems is required beyond an apprenticeship. The position requires the years of experience to be journey level received after completion of an apprenticeship program, which equates to a minimum of six years of total experience.

 

The ideal candidate will also possess strong written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and will work well with others on a team. Knowledge of residential building codes is a plus.
