Preference Points

If you have certain credentials and qualifications, you are eligible to have additional points added to your score. Preference points are added after interviews are completed. Once the interview portion has concluded, you will be contact by Human Resources and asked to submit your documentation. You must submit all documentation within the time guidelines in order to receive your points.         

URBANA RESIDENCY PREFERENCE – 5 POINTS

VETERANS PREFERENCE – 5 POINTS

To Qualify: You must have been engaged in the military service of the United States for at least one year of active duty and honorably discharged; or currently a member on inactive or reserve duty in the military or naval service.

What to Submit: A copy of your DD form 214, we will accept other verification of your service (such as a letter signed from your superior officer on official letterhead.) Upon successful verification, you will receive five (5) points added to your score on the eligibility register.

To Qualify: You must have lived within the defined corporate limits of Urbana for twelve consecutive months.

What to Submit: You must submit a copy of your current valid Illinois driver’s license or state I.D. card verifying your current address AND a copy of one of the following current documents: voter’s registration card, rental/lease agreement, Urbana Free Library card, or real estate tax bill with homestead exemption. You must submit BOTH forms of documentation to receive the points. Upon successful verification, you will receive five (5) points added to your score on the eligibility register.

Rescuing a Patient
Paramedics

To Qualify:

  • Current Illinois Department of Public Health  or National Registry EMT-Paramedic (EMT-P): five (5) points

  • Current Illinois Department of Public Health or National Registry AEMT/EMT-Intermediate, or current National Registry Paramedic certification: four (4) points

  • Current Illinois Department of Public Health EMT-Basic (IDPH EMT-B) or National Registry EMT license: two (2) points

What to Submit: A copy of your current license or certification.

To Qualify:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Nursing, or closely related area: four (4) points

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, any other curriculum: three (3) points

  • AAS in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Nursing, or closely related area: two (2) points

  • Associate’s degree or 60 hours of coursework (or equivalent) or higher, any other curriculum: one (1) point

What to Submit: A copy of your transcripts (official or unofficial) or a diploma.

To Qualify: Volunteer Community Service. Currently active and in good standing as a volunteer and has actively served as a volunteer in the organization for at least 12 months prior: two (2) points

 

What to submit: A letter on the organization’s letterhead and signed by a supervisor. The letter must state that the applicant is currently active and in good standing, serving in a voluntary capacity, and the amount of time the applicant has actively served as a volunteer in the organization.

To Qualify: Certification as a State of Illinois Certified Firefighter II or State of Illinois Basic Operations Firefighter.

What to Submit: A copy of your certification.
