IAFF Benefits
The following benefit package is associated with positions in the IAFF bargaining unit. Categories marked with an asterisk (*) are voluntary and available for additional costs. Please refer to the current IAFF contract for more information.
Medical Insurance
Your health insurance is effective on your start date. You may select from two PPO plan options through Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Illinois; both plans offer a network of providers and facilities. You may also choose from four dependent tiers. The City will contribute a portion of the cost for family dependent coverage based on the Standard Plan rate. Costs are shown per month below:

The Standard Plan is an 80/20 PPO. The City covers the full cost of the employee premium for the City’s Standard group health insurance plan.

Basic Life / AD&D Insurance
The City provides $20,000 in regular life insurance and $20,000 for Accidental Death & Dismemberment through Dearborn National. Enrollment is automatic and coverage is effective on your start date.
Supplemental Life/ AD&D Insurance*
MetLife plan premiums are based on your current age and the amount of coverage you choose. When you enroll for Supplemental Term Life Coverage, you also gain access to professional will preparation services. Supplemental coverage is also available for your spouse and dependent children.

Compensatory Time
Compensatory time (comp time) is accrued at the same rate as overtime hours subject to a maximum of 96 hours.
Educational Incentive Pay
If you have an Associate's degree (minimum 60 hours) in Fire Science and/or Paramedic, you are eligible to receive an education incentive of 1.25% of Base Firefighter (EMT-I) salary annually. For Bachelor's degrees in Fire Administration, Business Administration, or Public Administration, Firefighters receive 2.5% of Base Firefighter (EMT-I) salary annually.
Retirement
The Fire pensions are funded locally. Historically, the City has contributed more than required by law, which means that Urbana’s employee pension systems are all solidly funded. The Firemen's Pension Fund Board manages the Firemen's Pension Fund as prescribed under Chapter 5, Section 4 of the Statutes of the State of Illinois.
Supplemental Retirement Savings
This supplemental retirement plan (457 Deferred Compensation Plan through Mission Square Retirement is funded through pre-taxed and tax deferred employee contributions.
Vacation

During 1st year of service – ½ duty day per month employed to a max of 6 duty days

Vacation may be taken in 24 or 12 hour increments.
Sick Leave

Sick Leave accumulates with no maximum.

New employees start with 96 hours.

After completion of 1 year of service, 11.2 hours of sick leave accrues monthly.
Kelly Days

Hire date between January 1 and May 31st – accrue 24 hours

Hire date between July 1 and December 31st-accrue 48 hours

Hire date between June 1 and June 30 – accrue 0 hours

Accrue 48 hours each July 1 thereafter.
Holiday Pay
24-hour employees will receive 11.2 hours of regular pay, including longevity, for the following holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Spring Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day.
Uniform Allowance
The City provides initial issue of clothing at no expense to the employee. After satisfactorily completed probation, an employee has a uniform allowance of one hundred eighty-nine dollars ($189) will be given on or before August 15th.
Other Types of Leave
Family and Medical Leave; VESSA; Funeral Leave; Bereavement Leave; Military Leave; and Union Leave.
